Past wounds can obstruct our identity in Christ; How does God deal with the root of the issue
Updated: Jul 15, 2019
God’s plan for our lives is to grow in His understanding of truth and with that concept comes self-development that takes on the attributes of Christ’s character, which will forever be an ongoing process in the life cycle of a believer. Self-growth in Christ open doors to a higher elevation in our spirituality with God, giving us more profound knowledge to His will in our lives that brings Him all the glory with the recognition of praise.
But to develop the realization or fulfillment of one's talents and potentialities, especially considered as a drive or need present in everyone. Such level of self-actualization comes through growing our life, centered in Christ. Therefore, there will be times in our life that God will cause us to deal with the past.
Why does God cause us to face our demons from our past that at one time in our life almost destroyed us?
How do you respond when old “skeletons in your closet” of the sub-conscience are resurfaced to the top of your conscience by God?
I believe that there are things that have happened in our lives that were so bad, so toxic, and so damaging to the soul that we being only human took those moments of sufferings and suppressed them all the way back to the deepest part of our minds in order to move forward with life.
In the book of Mathew, Mark and Luke, the Bible talks about a woman who suffered with a blood issue (spirit of infirmity) for twelve years.
Twelve years!!!
Like many of us, we still function in our day-to-day but yet there are some toxic ”issues” “sufferings” that triggers us, triggers that pop up in our character from time to time that isn't able to be controlled. Our past of unresolved issues will try to control and dictate our future, such as PTSD, unforgiveness, bitterness, resentment, etc.
God will never leave you in the same state the enemy tried to keep you in.
“When the woman realized that she couldn’t remain hidden, she knelt trembling before Him. In front of all the people, she blurted out her story—why she touched Him and how at that same moment she was healed.”
Luke 8:47 MSG
Dealing with specific situations of our past, whether it be from a toxic relationship/s or experiences tend to manifest itself in some of our behaviors as adults. And because of those skeletons hidden away deep in our subconscious, it gets to a certain level in our walk with Christ that God deems the appointed time for certain things to be revealed and dealt with the right way, His way.
It is the Holy Spirit alone, who gave revelation to the Psalmist in how we are to respond to such circumstances when he wrote:
“Search me thoroughly, O God, and know my heart; Test me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there is any wicked or hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.”
PSALMS 139:23-24
We can’t move forward to a higher elevation of Spiritual growth in God without Jesus Christ being the center of it all. God, Himself has to remove those things that are dead within us. Our response is to be open-minded to letting the Holy Spirit search deep within our thinking; it may hurt to resurface old wounds, but it is also the healing process that brings restoration, recovery, and complete wellness in that distinct part of your heart that drivers behavior.
Ask God what binds you; what hinders you from being able to move forward in obtaining a more abundant life with Him? He will reveal in His timing. Not rushing the process of your growth let Him strengthen you through and through, faith to stronger trusting faith. There will be a particular time, a set season in your life when He says, "it's time."
Rest assured, when that appointed time comes of facing your hidden wounds of past sufferings; that very thing you weren’t able to deal with before, He will be right there with you. He will give you His Strength to face them head-on, and the His Healing Power to release the root of “that issue” that has held you back from being whole.
“And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.”
Mark 5:34 KJV
I want to encourage you today, when God deems it necessary to face your past that has caused you much suffering remember three things from this process:
He loves you
He wants to bring you to understanding where the root of the issue lies and where it first manifested so that you can forgive and let go of the thing that has bound you in your sub-conscience that drives uncontrolled behaviors or thoughts
He is in the business of restoring, healing, and creating sound mind so that He be glorified as others notice your transformation inside out as you live a free life
